The purpose of this course is for students to learn about Japanese communication behaviors and culture, using a comparative approach with other cultures. You are also expected to learn through your own experiences--very interactive and practical.
You will also learn intercultural communication mechanism and get to practice communication cross-culturally.
Through the peer teaching discussion in the beginning of each class, you will learn about the other cultures of your peers as well as Japanese values, and your own culture.
This course will basically cover the chapters that are not covered in spring, and aims at deepening the understanding of the spring course, and it is not mandatory to take the spring course.

It is taught in English and some Japanese.

異文化コミュニケーション学の基本を学びながら、焦点として、日本人のコミュニケーション行動と文化について学ぶ。
特に日本人のコミュニケーション行動の動機は何かを、日本人の価値観を学びながら考察する。自分の文化について無意識であることが大半なので、日本人学生にとっては、留学生とどう違うか、またはどの部分が似ているかを体得できる。
留学生と触れ、異文化コミュニケーションを実践で体験する。
前期でカバーされていない章を後期では、基本的に授業に取り入れる。さらに異文化コミュニケーションについて、そして日本人のコミュニケーションや価値観についての理解を深めること。しかし、前期を取る必要は無い。

授業は英語と少しの日本語で実施する。

Study

This is a continuation of the spring course but you don't need to take the spring course. It aims to deepen and broaden the understanding of the spring course.
1, You will gain knowledge about Japanese communication behaviors, and increase your appreciation toward Japanese culture. You will also understand how Japanese communication behaviors are greatly influenced by Japanese values.
2, You will also learn different cultures of the other foreign students through the peer discussion.
3, You will be able to apply some of your learning in the real life.
これは前期の継続ではあるが、前期のコースを取る必要はない。さらに前期の参加者は、理解をさらに広め深めることが狙いである。
１．日本人の価値観を学ぶことで、日本人の行動の動機がわかる。自分を学ぶことになる。
２．異文化コミュニケーションのメカニズムを学び、誤解は何故起きるのか、どう誤解を解くのかのスキルやツールを手に入れる。
3．多文化の留学生と接し、異文化を肌で知る。

In almost every class students will have peer discussion, based on the HW assignment reading of the textbook, in the first 10-15 minutes (peer teaching.) Chapters to cover in the textbook, The Culture Map, are as follows: Introduction, ch. 1, 5, 6 and 7 or 8. A supplementary material, written by Yamamoto, will be provided in class at no charge.

Note: I strongly recommend to purchase the textbook (paper-based) and NOT e-books like Kindle. You'd have a hard time to follow the lecture when the lecturer tells you a certain page number to open the book. The lecture will be proceeded based on the paper-based.

Fifteen classes as follows.　　
1-2: Orientation: Course Introduction & Self-Introduction ; Some theories of intercultural communication - What is Hidden Culture?
3: Discussion on the Introduction of The Culture Map, our main textbook.
4: Hidden Culture & Japanese Some Main Values (Harmony, Relationships, Form, etc.)
5: Discussion on the Chapter 1 of The Culture Map.
6: Japanese Communication Style, using cases.
7: Discussion on the Chapter 5 of The Culture Map,
8: Japanese values, yours and mine.
9: Discussion on the Chapter 6 of The Culture Map, our main textbook.
10: Communication Styles: High-/Low-Context Cultures; Your Cultural Style and Peers?
11: (option) Discussion on the Chapter 7 or Chapter 8 of The Culture Map.
12: Summary and prep. of the presentation.
13-15:　Group Presentation & summary.

This may be subject to change. It will be announced in class.

授業の最初15分は、毎回与えられるトピック（主にテキストから）について互いの考えに触れ、それをもとに話し合いをする。
英語のテキストはハードルが高いかもしれないが、日本語の参考書は原書の日本語版なので、日本人学生にやりやすいかもしれない。コースでは、第1章、5章、6章、に加え7章か8章をカバーする予定。講師が執筆した副読本は、後日、無料で配信される。
注：　テキストは紙媒体のものを購入ください。電子書籍（例：Kindle）では、紙媒体とのページ番号の不一致が起き得ます（講義は紙の書籍を元に行います）。

1-2: コースのオリエンテーション、異文化コミュニケション学の概念や実践練習。
3: 「異文化理解力（The Culture Map)のイントロについての話し合い。
4: 隠れた文化：日本人の価値観について深める (Harmony, Relationships, Form, Efforts, etc..)
5: 「異文化理解力（The Culture Map)の第1章についての話し合い。
6: 日本人のコミュニケーションスタイル、ケーススタディをケースで学ぶ。
7: 「異文化理解力（The Culture Map)の第5章についての話し合い。
8: 日本人の価値観、あなたの価値観、私の価値観。さらに違いと共通性について理解を深める。
9: 「異文化理解力（The Culture Map)の第6章についての話し合い。
10: Communication Styles : High-/Low-コンテキスト文化；多様な文化の理解を深める。
11: (option)「異文化理解力（The Culture Map)の第7章か第8章についての話し合い。
12：まとめと発表準備

You're expected to study for 1 hour weekly or so outside of class.
You are required to read each chapter in advance almost every other week outside of class. You will also have group meetings to prepare for your group presentation.
授業外学習は全体で平均週1時間前後を要する。英語版のテキストの場合はこれに準じない。日本語の翻訳も選択肢として考えても良いかもしれない。
学期前半は、予習としてテキストを読んでクラスでの話し合いに備える。また、グループ発表の準備は、授業外でのグループでの話し合いが必要である。

英語が使用言語だが、日本語も補助的に使用することもある。
留学生は日本人学生との交流を希望しており、留学生との話し合いや発表の準備を通して学ぶことが多いだけに、日本人学生を歓迎する。語学と異文化力の両面の実力アップを真剣に考える日本人学生に最適である。

１単位の授業科目は、４５時間の学修を必要とする内容をもって構成することを標準としています。１単位の修得に必要となる学修時間の目安は、「講義・演習」については１５～３０時間に授業および授業時間外学修（予習・復習など）３０～１５時間、「実験、実習及び実技」については３０～４５時間の授業および授業時間外学修（予習・復習など）１５～０時間です。
One-credit courses require 45 hours of study. In lecture and exercise-based classes, one credit consists of 15-30 hours of class time and 30-15 hours of preparation and review outside od class. In laboratory, practical skill classes, one credit consists of 30-45 hours of class time and 15-0 hours of preparation and review outside of class.
